A newspaper recently quoted a retail expert as saying that, "The danger in this sector is an attitude of haughtiness; specialty-store staff and owners know so much about the sports and equipment, they can be arrogant, overlook potential customers and competition..." It's not the first time this charge has been leveled against the specialty industry. What's behind the perception and what must specialty stores do to become more welcoming, inviting? Or does it matter?
